I was like a kid in a candy store.

Dripping from the sale stands in H&M South King Street were accessories reduced to €3 and under. Everything from embellished hairbands and oversized earrings, to woven bracelets and double finger rings were plastered in glorious red stickers, seducing obsessive accessory addicts. It wasn’t long before I found myself at the checkout with half a dozen sets of studs, three bracelets, two pendants and a couple of headbands.

Impulse purchases? Completely.

Worth it? Thirteen items for €13...Yes, I reckon so.

1. The Subject: While wandering around the Loft Market last weekend, I stumbled upon this shoulder-padded black chiffon blouse. At first I wasn't wholly keen on the immense shoulder padding and dis-proportionality small pointed collar, but as soon as that €5 tag revealed itself, an instant enthusiasm developed. Rather than seeing an unflattering, funky-smelling, previously worn chiffon concoction, I beheld an unflattering, funky-smelling, previously worn garment of great potential. It was only a matter on hours before the D.I.Y. fever set in....

2. Chop the Sleeves: After trying it on with the sleeves, I was informed that I closely resembled a Spanish bullfighter..

3. Embellish: This felt sequin crest was only €3.50 in Hickeys. Iron-on designs are uber easy and so quick to use!

4. X marks the spot: use dress making chalk for this.

5. Stick it: Iron on the crest at a medium temperature (temperature requirements will vary for different fabrics).

..... Et Voila!

I much prefer this understated grunge look. The original style may have been acceptable in the 80's, but sometimes these things are better left a distant memory...

Okay, this might be pushing it a little, but there's no denying that ever since I diverted attention toward dresses, my shoes/accessories obsession has been virtually eradicated (apart from a pair of basic platformed courts from Penneys, which were reduced to a fiver).

Today's dress was snatched up in H&M for a mere €9.95. It usually retails at €14.95 but being the lovely high-street retailer that H&M is, they're giving it to us for the former price all week.

Apart from the ridiculously affordable nature of this capped-sleeved body-con number, it's also a perfect casual-turned-dressy alternative for those indeterminable nights out. Bang on a pair of biker boots and you're ready to rock the grungy Daisy Lowe look, or opt for some stilettos and a clutch for Leigh Lezark's edgy yet sophisticated style.

I'm smitten. The next five dresses have a hard act to follow.

Following a recent examination of my spending patterns and a colossal wardrobe clear-out, I have come to the conclusion that footwear and accessory purchases must be toned down somewhat. In former years, skinny jeans and casual tops were my greatest retail weaknesses, but it has become clear that statement shoes and oversized totes are the current objects of my infatuation.

Last Monday I committed myself to breaking this god-awful obsession, an endeavor that proved extremely satisfying.

After waltzing into River Island, I made a conscious decision not to venture near the accessories floor. Instead, it was a dart straight for the sale stand, where reduced dresses of all patterns and prints awaited.

Anxiety began to set in once an enormous crowd of souvenir-hungry tourists flooded the area, throwing last season's designs over new season rails and dismissing unwanted garments onto the floor. Suddenly, a surge of adrenalin overtook the lax browsing that had previously been established. The blitz-sale mentality had set in, turning innocent shoppers into territorial animals competing for their prey.

Thankfully, no blood was shed nor was the security control unit called, but suffice to say a "tense" atmosphere prevailed through the retail jungle. After an hour in battle I departed the scene of the crime, clenching this Missoni-inspired shift in an iron grip, lest any bitter onlookers should dare to snatch the prize.

Apart from the major feat that this stunning addition represents, it also symbolises a breakaway from the footwear fiend who once stood here.

Garments need not be vintage to hold a story.

Last Friday saw the launch of their SS '12 collections, an event which invigorated an otherwise dormant fashion scene. Fashion Illustration for the Ill-Sketcher

I’m no artist. I think that point is clearly illustrated from the measly attempts below. However, for my sixteenth birthday my godmother presented me with Fashion Illustration School, an illustrative bible for “aspiring designers and illustrators”.

As the years passed, this gem of artistic wisdom lay humbly next to The Fashion Book, Fifty Dresses that Changed the World and several other style anthologies, receiving much less attention than truly deserved. I had always intended to make a start on my budding career as a “fashion illustrator”, yet school and socializing always seemed to take first priority. Thankfully, since my life no longer revolves around the former, I can embrace contouring; shading and layering with the open arms that they deserve (don’t be fooled by any use of artsy jargon, at present my artistic vocabulary amounts to around five words- all of which I intend to make great use).

I made my first stab yesterday, attempting to sketch an eye and a basic silhouette. However, the supposedly proportional figure turned out to have a less than proportional head, and the eye seems to convey a menacing disposition. Here’s hoping all will get better with time…..

Well, what do we think?

These synthetic booties are love children of the Melissa and Gaetano Pesce collaboration. Pesce, Italian architect/artist/designer, strove to create a feminine yet architectural and revolutionary collection, consciously departing from the "poorly made" footwear lines that now stomp our streets.

The ankle boots, which may not be ideal for everyday wear-and-tear, are made from synthetic materials and consist of interconnected circles which can be chopped and changed to suit one's own taste.

My personal view: I fully appreciate and commend the artistic genius behind the collection, yet find myself experiencing serious Minstrel cravings....

Versace for H&M '11 McQueen SS '09

"South Tropic" by Topshop.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for re-creating designer looks on high-street budgets, but Topshop's most recent S/S line irritates me immensely. The collection, which is entitled "South Pacific", seems to be too similar to Versace's previous collaboration with H&M.

Kitsch paradise prints have been painted, plastered and paraded across everything from bomber jackets to holdalls. The collection looks like just another high-street fad; one that will no doubt infiltrate naive fashion followers.

The line looks as if it's trying to be as hipster and as original as possible, yet doing so defeats the supposed purpose of that easy-going/totally unique style. Instead, it wreaks "mass-production" and its prints look like tacky flash-blacks from the eighties.

Apart from the fact that they are so similar to Versace and its signature prints, their campaign hairstyles also closely resemble those of Alexander McQueen's SS 2009 collection.

Unoriginal. Uninspiring. Unimpressed.

As I sit here typing away, my eyes remain fixated on the newest addition to chez Lolo's humble knitwear collection. As you probably know, over the past season I have developed a worrying obsession for shawl collared jumpers, so imagine the ecstasy that filled every fiber of my being when the other half presented me with this stunning cable-knit number.

The deep blue geansaí, which had been mentioned on Just Lolo last November (cue appreciation for endearing thoughtfulness), constitutes everything you could ever want from a winter woolly: cable stitches (yet not in excess), ribbed cuffs (perfect for preventing over-stretched sleeves) and most importantly, the impeccable shawl collar.

It's simply perfect.

Poor health prevented me from venturing into the big smoke for some (much anticipated) post-Christmas splurging. I'd like to take this opportunity to formally thank my bacteria-ridden, nose-snuffling, Lemsipping colleagues for this oh-so-generous donation.

Funnily enough, the lack of cosmopolitan exposure has yet to evoke excruciating withdrawal symptoms. Perhaps it's because of my brief retail fix yesterday, which saw a two-hour excursion to a local shopping centre. Needless to say it was no Grafton Street, but the laid-back atmosphere and indoor heating did ease me nicely into the reductionful realm.

Here are three statement pieces I managed to nab while on my hobbles....

Absolutely adore this grey waterfall cardigan by Crafted at Republic. The black ribbed sleeves, side zip detail and leather-like lining turn it from a typical, run-of-the-mill cardi, to a stunning, alternative statement piece. Was €45, Lolo's for €26. Bargain investment.

In love with these lace up booties from Penneys. It just so happens that I was searching high and low for a new pair of black covered-over heels. Success. Were €23, Lolo's for €12.

These babies have become my most treasured possessions. Tasselled loafers were otherwise known (in my books) as 'grandad shoes', but I'm willing to endorse these beauties for their stunning rustic finish and divinely-cut heels. Were €72, then €38, Lolo's for €21.60, from Faith at Debenhams.

Neoprene, cotton and polyester were big contenders on the outerwear front, while canvas and suede remained unrivaled components of uber-popular Chelsea boots, deck shoes and loafers. There is no denying the aesthetic pleasure derived from gazing at these wondrous works of design, but in truth, they will all amount to nothing once rain, wind or snow hits. Luxe leather, on the other hand, promises to shield against heavy downpours, prevents body heat from escaping the walls of winter attire, and NEVER dates. All in all, leather, or a leather-substitute, is the way to go.

When delving into the realm of leatherdom, one needn't look further than Armani, the Italian brand renowned for working leather to perfection. The first ever charity single recorded using Twitter was launched in Dublin today. It started with a late night tweet on Saturday 19th November from @BrendaDrumm, from Newbridge Co Kildare. Brenda posed the question to Twitter: “Wouldn’t it be great to have a Twitter Xmas Single?” Tweet by tweet her idea became very real and last Sunday up to 140 people gathered in the Westin Hotel in Dublin to record the first ever charity Twitter Christmas single.

The charity to benefit from this initiative was also chosen through Twitter. There were dozens of great suggestions of very worthy charities that might benefit from the #twitterxmassingle but it was decided that the Neonatal special care unit in the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street, Dublin would be the beneficiary.

Winter Song is the song that has been recorded because it is a beautiful song that fits the season but also because the words are perfect and it is almost like they were written by someone who has watched their child being cared for in the neonatal unit.

Speaking at the launch of #twitterxmassingle Brenda Drumm said: “I have been overwhelmed at the response to a very short and sweet tweet that I sent out on my Twitter account on Sat 19th November. In just two weeks we have taken a tweet and turned it into a single which is now being tipped to be the Christmas number one. I had no idea that anything like this would happen and it really just shows the power of Twitter and the generosity and goodwill in the hearts of Irish people. This is the real spirit of Christmas at work.”

Brenda went on to say: “I am very excited to be launching a single for charity and I hope that people will download it and love it as much as I do. Whilst this has shown what Twitter can do, ultimately it is all about the babies and their parents in Unit 8, in Holles Street, who I hope will benefit from this.”Winter Song is now available through the usual download channels – the links are posted at the #twitterxmassingle hashtag.

H&M have fast become the greatest high-street store for designer collaborations, having previously featured the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Sonia Rykiel and most recently Versace. There's no stopping Hennes and Mauritz.
SS2012 will see the launch of the Marni collaboration (please attempt to contain your excitement). Expect bolt prints, funky illustrations, and fresh silhouettes.

Yesterday morning saw the launch of Re-Dress's Made In Ireland project in The Bailey Bar, Duke Street. Sadly due to a painfully irritating tummy bug, I was unable to attend the auspicious ocassion, which saw industry folk gathering together for a lovely breaky, an introduction to the project and a showcase of Irish designs.

Signature Swing Tags

The insightful project, whose eye-catching swing tag acknowledges fashion and accessories produced in Ireland, promotes stunning Irish design while also giving a boost to the Irish fashion industry, which has taken an incredible blow since the recessionary birth.

The Kooples SS 2012 Preview

In the midst of an exceedingly strenuous day, full to the buttoned waistband with lectures and assignment attempts, I had the opportunity to pop over to Brown Thomas for a sneak peak at The Kooples SS2012 collection.

After eventually arriving at the personal shopping suite, warm welcomes were received by possibly the most cheerful press pair ever; the lovely Charlotte and Darren from BPCM London.

Following a little natter about the duo's stay in our glorious emerald city, we got right down to work.

I was promised a collection POPPING with COLOUR, statement SKULLS and casual CLASS...and the line certainly lived up to its promising preface.

Raspberry, ivory and strawberry skinny jeans hung nonchalantly from felt hangers, dainty dropped-waist silhouettes flittered delicately in a passing breeze, the marl grey two-piece flaunted an air of casual supremacy over its three-piece counterpart, while an immaculately tailored scarlet blazer remained cool under the intense scrutiny of the caffeine-ridden blogger.

The Kooples SS 2012 is a collection not to be missed.

An account of last Thursday morning...

8.30am. Arrive at H&M South King's Street. Have a goo in the windows. "Hmmm, there's no queue. It must be quieter than expected. Well at least I'll get in before all the best bits are snatched up."

9.00am. Still under the assumption that I'll have plenty of time to rummage around, no large mobs. Beginning to wonder why it's so quiet, surely anybody who has the slightest interest in fashion is aware of the biggest designer/ high-street collaborations of all time? Ah well, their loss! I guess I'll just stand around admiring the window displays and taking iPics of random passers-by like a wannabe photographer.

9.05am. Oh look, a re-enactment of Trinity Art's Block.. Their über alternative dress sense seems to have enraptured the interest of the Xposé entourage.

9.06am. Ggggrrrr, I've just been informed that the event is wristband-entry only and that the next available slot is at 10.30. I knew all of this spectatorship business would be the death of any possible happiness. Guess I'll head over to Butler's for some super sugary wake-up delights. Chocolate always fixes everything.

10.20am. Descending the escalator to find the metres-wide cordoned off Versace area. Adrenalin levels begin to soar. Excitement begins to display itself in the rather goofy ear-to-ear smile plastered across my visage. Ten minute commencement warning given by intimidating Versace people.

10.21am. Join the queue. Eavesdrop on two ladies standing ahead of me. Uncover their plans to head straight for my coveted garment- the pink studded shift.

Oh, it's on.

Listen in on the mother/son exchange behind me- plotting to race straight for the 100% silk scarves.

Oh, it is sooo on.

Versace people sound the penultimate commencement warning. Mr.Securityman tells me to put away my phone- no pics allowed. Batting eyelashes fails to have any affect on the terrifyingly tall tank. Reluctantly conceal my phone.

10.29am. Given the run-through by intimidating Versace lady.

1. Only ten minutes to rummage.

2. Once you leave the enclosed space, it's sayonara sister; there ain't no coming back.

3. One purchase per customer.

4. Physical violence will be seen as a criminal offense (joking, but this definitely should have been stated. How was I to have known otherwise?)

10.30 am. Gate opened, crowd of Versacoholics titter over to stands in sky-high stilettos (amateurs, don't they know anything about sprint shopping?) Mother behind me darts straight for the scarves- picks up the last five. Tempted to bend rule 4, but successfully manage to restrain myself. Head over to the pink studded dresses- none left in my size. Grrrr...

Mosey around but fail to find anything in my size. Head over to accessories, decide that if all else fails I'll snap up something small to remember the occasion.

10.36. Decide on a patent cerise pink belt. Give the area a quick once-over to ensure that nothing has been missed. Hover over the 5 remaining shoe boxes. Somebody lifts up one of the boxes onlt to reveal.... the scarf! Drop the belt, grab the scarf, scurry off to the tills.

10.30am. Time up. Successful purchase in my super snazzy Versace carrier.

Ahhhh... what a fine way to begin a Thursday.

Collection Of Style

Posted below are some snippets from the COS SS 2012 preview, held last Wednesday morning in the Annex on Earlsford Terrace. The Annex, I was informed, once acted as a tennis court for the Guinness family's residence, and later as an engineering lab for UCD!

The historical location was an impeccable setting for the raw and understated collection, which so perfectly epitomises an alternative preppy approach to summer fashion. The stunning line, which features an eclectic mix of fabrics, textures and silhouettes brings a crisp, fresh style to the fore, while also retaining it's affordable charm.

During the preview I had the pleasure of speaking to COS's lovely press team, who informed me of a possible COS store opening in Dublin. Watch this space! In the meantime, you can find COS in BT2 on Grafton Street.

I rarely ever maintain enough attention to sit through a whole award ceremony; be it the Oscars, VMAs, Golden Globes, or The Grammys.

However, like the vast majority of fashion folk out there, I see my ineptitude as being counter-balanced by the hours spent style-stalking the next day. Whether it be splashed across tabloids, or plastered all over the Internet, red carpet fashion is one aspect of human existence that continues to excite the masses.

In theory, one could apply this same observation to Lady Gaga, but I'll spare her the sycophancy. Apparently she managed to "stun" crowds with this uber-eccentric Paco Rabanne galactic paper dress at the EMAs last night. I wasn't stunned.

Sorry Gaga, but the novelty of these O.T.T. ensembles is fast diminishing.

A MAVRELous Christmas

Yesterday morning saw the launch of Brown Thomas's renowned Marvel Room. Upon arrival, industry insiders were greeted with warm welcomes from the ladies of Kennedy PR and the ever-snazzy BT concierges. Dapper young men awaited each guest at the top of the escalators, seducing all with their scrumptious breakfast canapés (Lanvin breakfast biscuits also made the rounds just as I was leaving).

With meet and greets put to a side, it was time to get down to business. And what a hard business this is! Gazing all around, I felt like a kid in a candy store. I wanted EVERYTHING, from McQueen Wrap Bracelets and Pauric Sweeney purses, to Ms Elliot colouring books and candy striped sweet boxes. I'm even considering taking poker lessons, just so that I have an excuse to invest in a stunningly sleek Dunhill poker set. There are simply so many exceptional gifts that it would be impossible to go through everything, but suffice to say, The Marvel Room has definitely got something for everyone (even the fashion-foreword pooches out there). Prices are fantastic too, with gifts beginning from a mere €10!

I highly recommend everybody taking a trip down to Grafton Street's key gift-spot, even if it's just for a mosey. You never know what you'll find!

Through The Looking Glass

Yesterday evening, following a lengthy day of Dickinson deciphering and endless streams of lukewarm "cappuccinos", I decided to take a little wander around the sleeping streets of our emerald city.

While on my spontaneous saunter, a light bulb moment struck (whether this was due to a delayed caffeine surge or just pure artistic revelation is yet to be confirmed).

An intense appreciation for the vast array of diverse window displays filled my very being.

I became a woman obsessed, suddenly snapping at the sight of every alternative backdrop, unconventional mannequin pose and slick-ass styling, until finally Mr.Apple informed me that my memory was full to capacity.

Yes ladies and gentlefolk, it's that time of year again.
Daylight begins to fade into oblivion, winter woollies re-emerge from their momentary slumber, phrases like "the big freeze", "torrential rain" and "flash flooding" integrate themselves into our day-to-day vocabulary, and retailers bombard us with notifications about Christmas' fast approach (because we really need reminding).

But wait, what is this? Halloween?! Ah yes, the one occasion a year when ladies are endowed with social consent to dress up in barely-there ensembles, emulating their most favourite farmyard animals.

I often go on nights out in Dublin, but recently I've found that my feet are left frozen from wearing strappy or open toe heels. Coffee With L'Or

Last Friday, after a baffling fifteen minutes of direction exchanges, I sat down with the stunning L'Or Mayo of Morgan The Agency.

Extensive quantities of Costa's mouth-watering hot chocolate graced our table, and it wasn't long before the gossip began to spill (along with my boiling hot choc). After lengthy discussions about high street bargains, recent Brown Sugar shoots with Barry McCall, green-tea addictions and college fashion trends, we eventually delved into the history of L'Or's modelling career.

"It all began on Paddy's Day when I was about fifteen and a half..." an obscure opener, I agree. "My friends and I were in town and one of the girls wanted to go to the MAC section in Brown Thomas". L'Or leaped at the idea to browse through the luxury cosmetics, but became slightly "freaked out" when she noticed that a member of staff was staring at her.

Little did she know that this make-up artist would be to thank for her first dabble in modelling. It turned out that the MAC artist had hoped L'Or would feature in an unpaid portfolio shoot, an opportunity the young beauty jumped at.

Within a few weeks, she was striking poses for the renowned Lili Forbeg. The fashion photographer saw huge potential in this shy teen, and urged her to approach a modelling agency. Shortly after, L'Or and her parents met with Rebecca from Morgan, who signed her up instantly.

At first, reactions from her peers were less than supportive, "when I started modelling, I lost a lot of friends. My teachers were all so proud of me and would always ask how I was getting on, but girls in my school used to say mean things like what are you going to do if you get run over by a bus?". To me, this response seemed to reek of catty jealousy. Nevertheless, L'Or stayed grounded and has gone on to become one of the most diverse models in Ireland.

Since signing up with Morgan, L'Or has modelled for everybody from Brown Thomas and Harvey Nichols, to UGDO and Belfast Fashion week. She thanks this to her incredible "family" in Morgan, and praises mother hen-like agents Rebecca and Jessie, who are "always there for me, even if I just need a chat or a bit of a cry".

So what's next for this ebony beauty? "One of my biggest dreams is to model in London. I'd also love to do a huge Topshop campaign" (after spending more than five minutes with L'Or, you quickly learn that she is a complete Topshop addict). Ideas are also swirling about a possible fashion/modelling blog- watch this space!
